What is Myofascial Release?

The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release approach is a safe and effective hands-on technique that addresses the whole body by treating the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms.  Slowly applied gentle pressure allows the fascia to release to restore motion and eliminate pain.  This approach produces positive long lasting results.  Restrictions can be caused by trauma, inflammation and surgery and do not show in many standard tests (x-rays, CAT scans, etc.).  This technique is done without lotion or oil allowing the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the right amount of pressure to allow for the fascia to release.  This technique also empowers you with education to self treat so you get the best results.

Fascia is a dense connective tissue that surrounds and goes through every muscle, bone, nerve, cell, organ, blood vessel.  It is one continuous 3-dimentional web from head to toe where ever part is connected like a sweater.  If you pull on one thread of a sweater it can pull in multiple directions throughout the sweater.  This is why we find the pain and look elsewhere for the cause by treating the whole body.  When fascia is healthy it flows freely and is fluid.  It has the ability to stretch without restriction.

  • Trauma
  • Inflammation
  • Surgery
  • Poor Posture
  • Emotional Distress

Fascia that looses it’s flexibility results in pain or limited range of motion.  When the restrictions are released you can return to a pain-free and active lifestyle.

The human body is not linear.  Healing is more than just physical/structural.  In order to truly heal we must look at the mind-body complex and treat the whole person.  Many therapies separate each part of the mind-body only to achieve temporary results.  The myofascial release approach recognizes the connection of the mind and body and helps to facilitate this healing process in a safe and comfortable space free of judgement.
